All 22 NIC 2025 Sections - From Agriculture to Extraterritorial Activities

Each Section groups related industries. Pick your sector below to drill down through Divisions, Groups, Classes and Sub-classes until you reach the exact six-digit code needed for registration.

All divisions
Ag Section A Agriculture

A

Agriculture, forestry and fishing

India's farm economy feeds over a billion people and employs nearly half the workforce. Section A classifies every activity tied to growing crops, raising animals, managing forests and harvesting aquatic resources. Three Divisions break it down: crop and livestock production (01), forestry and logging (02), and fishing with aquaculture (03). If your revenue comes from the field, the forest or the water, start here and drill into the Sub-class that matches what you actually grow, rear or catch.
Mn Section B Mining

B

Mining and quarrying

Coal, crude oil, iron ore, limestone, sand, granite - if your business pulls raw material out of the ground, Section B is where NIC 2025 places it. Five Divisions cover coal and lignite (05), petroleum and gas extraction (06), metal ores (07), non-metallic quarrying (08) and mining support services (09). Mineral trading without extraction belongs under Section G, not here.
Mf Section C Manufacturing

C

Manufacturing

Section C is the largest in NIC 2025 - 24 Divisions spanning food processing, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, automobiles, steel and everything in between. Any enterprise that transforms raw materials into new products through mechanical, chemical or manual processes will find its six-digit code here. India's PLI push has made this Section increasingly relevant for new MSME and Udyam registrations.
Pw Section D Power

D

Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply

Power plants, solar farms, wind energy operators, gas distribution networks and district heating systems all belong to Section D. It contains a single Division (35) that branches into electricity generation, transmission, distribution and the supply of gas, steam and cooled air. If your business produces or delivers energy in any form, this is your one-stop Section.
Wa Section E Water

E

Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities

Section E groups the essential environmental services that keep cities running - water treatment and supply (36), sewage collection and processing (37), and contaminated site cleanup (39). If your enterprise handles water purification, sewage treatment plants, septage management or pollution remediation, the matching codes sit inside these three Divisions.
Cn Section F Construction

F

Construction

Residential towers, commercial complexes, highways, bridges, electrical wiring, plumbing - all of it falls under Section F. Three Divisions split the work: building construction (41), civil engineering and infrastructure (42), and specialized trades like HVAC, demolition and site preparation (43). India's real estate and infrastructure sectors are among the largest employers, and most builders and contractors file using codes from this Section.
Tr Section G Trade

G

Wholesale and retail trade

Buying goods and reselling them - without transforming them - is what Section G classifies. Division 46 handles wholesale trade to businesses, institutions and other dealers, while Division 47 covers retail sale directly to the consumer. From a kirana shop to an e-commerce warehouse, every trading enterprise that does not manufacture its own product belongs here.
Lg Section H Logistics

H

Transportation and storage

Moving people, freight and parcels across land, water and air is classified under Section H. Five Divisions cover road and rail transport (49), shipping (50), aviation (51), warehousing with logistics support (52) and postal and courier services (53). India's logistics costs still account for a significant share of GDP, so this Section touches almost every supply chain in the country.
Ho Section I Hospitality

I

Accommodation and food service activities

Hotels, hostels, resorts, restaurants, cafes, cloud kitchens, caterers and food trucks - if your business provides a place to sleep or a meal to eat, Section I is the starting point. Division 55 covers accommodation and Division 56 handles food and beverage services. India's hospitality sector bounced back strongly after 2020, and new registrations in this Section reflect that growth.
Md Section J Media

J

Publishing of books, newspapers, periodicals and other publishing activities

Section J captures the creation and distribution side of media. Division 58 covers book, newspaper, magazine and software publishing. Division 59 handles film, television and music production. Division 60 classifies broadcasting, news agencies and content distribution platforms. If your business produces, publishes or distributes media content in any format, the right code is inside one of these three Divisions.
In Section K Information

K

Telecommunications, computer programming, consultancy, computing infrastructure, and other information service activities

India's IT and telecom sector drives a massive share of the country's service exports. Section K holds three Divisions: telecom operators and ISPs (61), software development and IT consulting (62), and data centres, hosting and information services (63). Whether you run a mobile network, build apps, manage cloud infrastructure or operate a web portal, your NIC code lives in this Section.
Fi Section L Finance

L

Financial and insurance activities

Banks, NBFCs, stock brokers, insurance companies, mutual fund houses, payment gateways and pension managers are all classified under Section L. Three Divisions split the financial world: core financial services (64), insurance and pension funding (65), and auxiliary activities like broking and advisory (66). RBI-regulated, SEBI-registered or IRDAI-licensed - whichever regulator applies, the NIC code starts here.
Re Section M Real estate

M

Real estate activities

Buying, selling, renting, leasing and managing property - whether residential flats, commercial office space, industrial land or shopping malls - falls under Section M. It contains a single Division (68) that covers real estate agents, developers, property managers and facilities leasing companies. If your primary revenue comes from real estate transactions or rental income, this is the correct Section.
Pr Section N Professional

N

Professional, scientific and technical activities

Law firms, chartered accountants, management consultants, architects, engineers, research labs, advertising agencies, veterinary clinics and specialized design studios - Section N brings together every knowledge-driven professional service. Seven Divisions (69-75) carve out legal and accounting work, head office and consultancy functions, engineering, R&D, advertising, niche technical services and animal health care.
Sv Section O Support services

O

Administrative and support service activities

The businesses that keep other businesses running sit in Section O. Equipment rental (77), staffing agencies (78), travel operators (79), private security firms (80), building maintenance and cleaning (81), and back-office support like call centres and event management (82) - six Divisions cover the full spectrum of outsourced and administrative support functions.
Pa Section P Public admin

P

Public administration and defence; compulsory social security

Government ministries, defence forces, police departments, judiciary offices, fire services and state-run social security bodies are classified under Section P. This Section exists for the public sector - most private businesses will not select a code from Division 84. However, if your entity is a government body or a statutory authority filing for classification, this is where you belong.
Ed Section Q Education

Q

Education

From anganwadis and primary schools to IITs, private universities, coaching centres, driving schools and corporate training firms - Section Q holds a single Division (85) that classifies every form of education in India. Whether you teach in a classroom, online or on a field, the right Sub-class for your institution or ed-tech company is inside this Division.
Hl Section R Health

R

Human health and social work activities

Hospitals, diagnostic labs, dental clinics, old-age homes, disability support centres and community social work programmes are grouped under Section R. Division 86 covers clinical health care, Division 87 handles residential care facilities, and Division 88 classifies non-residential social services. India's healthcare sector is expanding rapidly, and this Section sees a high volume of new registrations.
Ar Section S Arts

S

Arts, sports and recreation

Theatre groups, musicians, museums, libraries, amusement parks, gyms, cricket academies, casinos and recreational clubs - Section S classifies the creative, cultural and leisure side of the economy. Four Divisions cover arts and performance (90), cultural institutions (91), gambling (92) and sports with recreation (93). If your business entertains, educates culturally or helps people stay active, start here.
Ot Section T Other services

T

Other Service Activities

Trade unions, professional associations, religious bodies, political parties, mobile repair shops, salon chains, laundry services and funeral homes - Section T gathers every service activity that does not fit neatly into the preceding Sections. Three Divisions handle membership organisations (94), repair and maintenance of personal goods and vehicles (95), and personal services like grooming and wellness (96).
Hs Section U Households

U

Activities of households as employers; undifferentiated goods- and services-producing activities of households for own use

Section U is used mainly for statistical surveys and census classification, not for typical business registration. Division 97 records households that directly employ domestic staff - cooks, drivers, nannies - while Division 98 captures subsistence activities like home-level farming or weaving done purely for the household's own consumption. Most businesses can skip this Section entirely.
Ex Section V Extraterritorial

V

Activities of extraterritorial organizations and bodies

UN agencies, World Bank offices, foreign embassies, consulates and international treaty organisations operating on Indian soil under diplomatic or extraterritorial privileges are classified here. Section V has a single Division (99) and a single Sub-class (990000). If your entity does not enjoy extraterritorial legal status, this Section does not apply to you - look at the Section that matches your actual commercial activity instead.

How NIC 2025 is used in Indian business registration

India's National Industrial Classification, NIC 2025, assigns a unique six-digit code to every business activity recognised by the Ministry of Statistics. When you register a company on MCA, file for an MSME certificate through Udyam, or set up an LLP, the form asks for an NIC code that matches your primary revenue line.

Picking the wrong code can delay approvals or trigger compliance queries later. This directory covers all 22 Sections, 86 Divisions, 257 Groups, 463 Classes and 1,887 Sub-classes published in the official MoSPI dataset. You can search by activity keyword, browse the hierarchy top-down, or convert an older NIC 2008 code to its 2025 equivalent.
